(This is the second of 12 entries in a photo/story series we shared over on Facebook & Instagram. We wanted to share it here on our site for those of you who are flying under the social media radar or who are just plain itching to see it again.)

I jotted down the chorus of this one in my journal right before walking out the door for our first show. It came to me fairly easily (I’ve always appreciated that about it). After the gig, I showed what I had to Melanie & we worked until it was pretty much all written that same evening.

I’ve always been a big Rich Mullins fan (pretty much grew up on him thanks to my parents), so I’d have to be lying if I said Mercy, Mercy wasn’t heavily inspired by his song “Let Mercy Lead.” I went back & forth between titles early on, with the runner-up title being “Because I Can’t See.” In my own life, I often feel blind when none of my reality is matching my expectations. I’m daily calling out for mercy over myself as I stumble forward into the often vague direction (e.g. this music) that is set before me.

During the recording process after I’d finished all of my parts, we really liked what we had, but it still needed some extra flavor. We asked our friend @corybreth to add his vocals to it right before we played a house show together this past summer & he absolutely killed it—it instantly filled in the missing space & became one of our favorite recorded tunes.
